Live Edge Slab Table Buyer's Guide — Sizes, Seating, Pricing and What to Check

What "single slab" actually means
A single-slab live-edge table is one continuous cross-section of one tree: no glue lines, no joined panels, no filler strips, and the natural edge left as the tree grew it. Most "live edge" tables sold online are two or three boards glued lengthwise with a routed artificial edge. The honest test is simple: look down the length of the top for a glue seam, and ask the seller in writing whether the top is one piece. Ours are one piece — one tree, one top, one of one.
The wood: Saman (monkeypod)
Saman — also sold as monkeypod, rain tree, or acacia in some markets — is a tropical hardwood with broad, dramatic grain movement and strong color contrast between heartwood and sap edge. It is a classic species for statement tables because trees grow wide enough to yield a dining-width top from a single slab, which walnut rarely does at this scale. Our slabs are cut and finished in Ecuador, where the trees grow, and imported directly by us — no broker, no middleman markup.
Sizes, seating, and published pricing
We keep three size classes on the floor in the Chicago area. Prices below are our published retail per table; each piece is priced individually by size and grade on its own product page.

Every top is 2½ inches thick, on a black steel base, factory-finished. Fifteen of our twenty tables run nine feet or longer — boardroom scale. The widest piece on our floor measures 50 inches across; the longest runs 10 ft 6 in.
What to check before you buy any slab table — ours or anyone's
Measure the room, not the table: allow at least 36 inches of pull-back space behind chairs on each side, and check the delivery path — stairwells, elevators, and door swings decide more table purchases than budgets do. Ask whether the top is one slab or a glue-up. Ask where the wood came from. Ask what the delivery actually costs, because on a 200-plus-pound table a seller who advertises "free delivery" and will not tell you what the service normally costs has simply put it in the price. And see the actual piece if you can: slab tables are one-of-one, so the photograph is a starting point, not the product.
Delivery, pickup, and holding a piece
Through 15 October 2026, white-glove final-mile delivery is free in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin — into the building, into the room, assembled, packaging removed. This is a limited promotion: that service normally runs $650–$750, quoted per order on distance, access and size, and it returns to that price after 15 October 2026. We never bake it into the table price, so you always see what the wood costs and what the logistics cost. Beyond those three states we quote common-carrier freight. Will-call pickup at our Lincolnwood warehouse is free, by appointment, seven days a week, 8 am–6 pm. A refundable $500 deposit reserves any specific slab while you measure, get approvals, or coordinate a move-in date.

These are interior pieces — dining rooms, boardrooms, restaurants, lobbies. We do not sell them for outdoor or patio use.

What size table seats 12 people comfortably?
A 9 ft table seats 10–12; a 10 ft table seats 12–14 with room for place settings. For a conference room, add presentation space at the head.
Are live edge conference tables available in stock in Chicago?
Yes — we hold twenty single-slab Saman tables at our Lincolnwood warehouse, fifteen of them nine feet or longer. They are already imported and finished, so there is no maker's lead time; a comparable custom slab table typically quotes 12–16 weeks.
What is the difference between monkeypod and walnut for a slab table?
Walnut slabs wide enough for a dining table are rare and usually joined from two or three boards. Saman (monkeypod) trees grow wide enough that a single slab can span a full dining or conference top — which is the point of a live-edge table.
How do I care for a slab table?
Wipe with a damp cloth and dry; use coasters and trivets against heat and standing water; keep it out of direct sun to protect the color; and keep indoor humidity reasonably stable, as with any solid-wood furniture.
